What is lean product thinking?

Lean product thinking is a methodology originally designed to help organizations bring products to market more quickly by trimming excess and inculcating customer feedback at each step of the development process. Nowadays it can also be applied to indviduals to help us achieve our goals faster with less effort in work and personal lives.

Lean product thinking was successfully pioneered by Toyota back in 1930s with the creation of their Toyota Production System. It aimed to help Toyota bring products to market faster while optimising resources by focusing on driving customer value, waste reduction and continous learning. Toyota’s success has led to the early rise of lean thinking across various industries, from manufacturing to healthcare.

With the fast development of digital technology in the last 30 years, it became a popular and critical product development methology again, especially after Eric Ries published his book The Lean Startup. In his book, Eric introduced the lean metholodogy which emphases validated learning, rapid experimentation and agility. Although a lot of the learning essences in the book were extracted from startup best practices, they can definitely also be applied to larger organisations and individuals.
